Numbers of Lapindo mudflow victims from the Tanggulangin Anggun Sejahtera I housing complex in Sidoarjo, East Java, come to the country's largest Muslim organization (Nahdlatul Ulama) office on Tuesday.
Welcomed by the general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulam KH Hasyim Muzadi, Hari Purnomo and Sukarto said the mudflow victims were really disappointed with the government's failure to handle the torrent of mud from a May 29 industrial accident that has overrun their homes, a turnpike and factories.<>
Both expected the nahdliyin-based organization to urge the government to accomodate the Lapindo mudflow victims` demand for 100 percent compensation in cash in accordance with the prices and values of their assets.
"Our demand is simple, a compensation amunted to Rp 200 million that should be immediately paid. there are about 7500 houses that should be compensated. the payment should be clear, what date, what month?" Purnomo told Hasyim.
As reported by NU Online, around 300 victims of the Lapindo Brantas hot mudflow disaster rallied outside the State Palace on Monday to demand adequate compensation for property they had lost because of the calamity.
The protesters demanded that the government give them adequate compensation for the homes and lands that had been flooded by incessant mud coming out from a Lapindo Brantas gas well in Sidoarjo.
"We are here (outside the State Palace) to demand that the government compensate us 100 percent in cash and that the payments be made to us directly," Sony Puji Sasono, leader of the "Solidarity with Lapindo Mudflow Victims Alliance," said on the sidelines of the rally. (rif)
