President Hugo Chavez said on Wednesday (5/7) that it is now that the South American peoples are free and independent.
At the end of a civil-military parade to mark the anniversary of Venezuela"s independence and the Day of National Armed Force (FAN), Chavez conveyed a warm congratulation to participants in the parade, which he described as wonderful and full of efficiency.
<>"We have witnessed how the guidelines of the new strategic plan are fulfilled by the strengthening of the nation"s armed component, in order to be in condition to guarantee the homeland"s security, sovereignty and defense," he stressed.
"Venezuela is not preparing to attack anyone, but let no one dare to attack us, as we are ready to safeguard our soil," Chavez warned.
He added that a day must come when Mercusor can have a defense organization with its own strategy of security and sovereignty.
"This elegant parade is a sign of the future, of unity in all spheres, as we have decided to be free rather than depend on any power center. As long as we are united, we will remain free," he said. (pl/dar)
