The government of the special region of Yogyakarta (DIY) expected assistance and support to restore the historical treasures in the region as a result of Saturday's earthquake hit both Yogyakarta and parts of Central Java.

The statement above was expressed by the Governor of DIY Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X while welcoming Indonesia’s Dutch ambassador’s visit, Nikolaos van Dam at Wilis Building, Yogyakarta’s governor complex, Tuesday (4/7).

Due to the aftermath, according to Sultan, there were many damaged historical treasures in Yogyakarta. In Kotagede for instance, about 75 cultural sites were broken. He said, it’s necessary to undertake such a study on how to start restoring just to maintain those cultural preserves not to be in worse conditions.

At the same time, the Dutch government also scheduled to assist in rebuilding the historical sites in DIY. “For this concern we will realize by assisting to restore the damaged cultural sites caused by the quake,” Nikolaos said.

Sultan suggested, at the first phase it’s necessary to make such a cultural preserve design. For that reason, the Dutch government was expected to support this.

“Support and assistance in restoring cultural preserve treasures are as important as other aspects. I express my thanks for Dutch's attention and assistance in restoring these cultural sites,” Sultan said.

Sultan also added that the Dutch government was initially ready to cultivate such a cooperation in conducting cultural art attractions as part of restoration efforts as that ever conducted by the late Sultan HB IX while being team leader of Borobudur Temple restoration. (nam)
