ASEAN DEFENSE FORUM (ADF): The US Design for Building Up Military Alliance in South East Asia?

By : Hendrajit* Paranoid has seemed to be such an order of the day for the United States (US) over the last few years in directing her foreign policy and national security. Especially related to the military matters, a reliable source within the Indonesia’s Parliamentary said that over the last few months, policy makers of President George W. Bush have been conducting a high-level diplomacy to persuade ASEAN countries to build up the military alliance in South East Asia under the umbrella of what called as ASEAN DEFENSE FORUM (ADF). The interesting side of the story is that the Philippine which is widely known as one of the US reliable ally since the War World Two, is being forced by the US to appear as the principle initiator of promoting ADF as the South East Asia-based military organ.

Fasting and good deeds within plural society

By: Hasyim Muzadi Fasting in the holy month of Ramadhan does not merely have a significance individually. Rather, it does emphasize on social significance in nature. That’s why, it’s expected for those who are fasting to do good deeds that are absolutely needed in society in sofar as Indonesia has been popular as a prospective country to do tolerance among religious adherents. Recently, issues about inter-religious harmony have been disturbed. I don’t want to discuss matters dealing with the faith and belief because it is clear that the matters are related to each individual. What next we want to develop is that at present we are inevitably living in plural society. For that reason, doing good deeds and social services among religious adherents has likely become an issue that is necessary to extend and intensify.

The History of American Paradox in Lebanon

By :  Hendrajit* Understanding the United States (US) role in Lebanon, first of all we should trace back the US strategy in handling its foreign policy direction in Middle East in general. For American policy makers the Middle East has often been a headache, sometimes a nightmare. It is the presence of the Jewish of state of Israel on Middle East Territory that was once Palestine that causes the Middle Eastern problem, whose magnitude cannot be exaggerated. Israelis and Arabs alike believe that the Middle East sets true believer against true believer with survival as the Issue. No wonder, then, that solutions are hard to find, or much worst, the warfare has been so bloody and costly. Thus, hatreds run so deep.

Unresolved Middle East Issues and Steps Islam Wants to Take

A. Hasyim Muzadi During a visit to the Middle East recently, I met with some key figures in the region. They were, among others, secretary-general of the Muslim World League, Dr. Abdullah Atturki, the secretary-general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, and leading figures of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). There were three topics discussed during my visit. First, the prospects of a solution to the Palestine-Israel problem, including the Hizbollah-Israel conflict. Second, post-U.S. aggression in Iraq and terrorism issues. Third, economic development in Islamic countries. These three topics embody the spirit and realization of the recommendations issued at the conclusion of the International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) in Jakarta, from June 20 to 23.

Considering the Meaning of Piety in Islam

By KH A. Mustofa Bisri* We have recently heard some Muslims questioning categorically about piety. As though in Islam there are to types of piety: “ritual piety” and “social piety”. Respecting the “ritual piety”, they tend to point toward such attitudes of those who emphasize obliged religious services, that related solely to God to attain self interest. Those who regularly perform such prayers, fast, and so forth; and do not care of social surroundings. In other word, they just emphasize relationship with Allah (Hablum minallah).

Berkeley Mafia undermines RI for 50 years

Kwik Kian Gie Since Suharto ‘s hold over the country, economists associated with such an unnamed organization so called as “Berkeley Mafia” (BM) has taken control the country’s economy up to now, excepting short period of time of KH Abrurrahman “Gus Dur” Wahid’s administration. During Gus Dur era, the impact of BM has not been as absolutely as previous power. Through the National Economy Council led by Prof. Emil Salim and Dr. Sri Mulyani Indrawati as secretary, it remained poerful in restraining the national economy. Then the following body set up that called as Assistant Team of Coordinating Minister for Economy and Finance, led by Prof. Widjojo Nitisastro and Sri Mulyani as secretary.
