Politicians divided on new Islamic coalition

Jakarta, NU Online Some Islam-based parties are pushing for a political coalition to win next year's elections, but others are questioning the relevance of such a sectarian alliance to nurture Indonesia's democracy and pluralism. The Islamic coalition, similar to the axis force that won Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid the presidency in 1999, is driven to reform the poor image and performance of the majority of Islam-based parties in the post-reform era.

NU disagrees with middle axis initiated by Muhammadiyah chairman

Jakarta, NU Online General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi expressed his disagreement with the second edition of the middle axis idea initiated by chairman of Muhammadiyah Dien Syamsuddin. Hasyim said the idea would not automatically and easily be met to be such a unifying force by Muslim organizations like NU and Muhammadiyah whose cadres in many political parties.

Jakarta, NU Online Labeled as the worst-managed in Indonesia`s history, this year`s hajj pilgrimage has become the subject of a motion of at least 121 legislators for a parliamentary inquiry into the government`s performance in organizing the annual activity. The lawmakers proposed on Tuesday the establishment of a hajj inquiry committee which is expected to issue a recommendation that the government should terminate its dual role of regulator as well as operator of hajj pilgrimages which cost over US$700 million per year.

Jakarta, NU Online The government`s decision to lower the diesel and premium gasoline prices has nothing to do with politics or efforts to boost President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s popularity, a cabinet minister said. Jakarta,  NU Online Otto Malik, the eldest son of Adam Malik, the late former vice president, issued a strong denial that his father was a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) agent as alleged in a US book.
