Palestinian President to receive Indonesia`s humanitarian aid team

Aman, NU Online The advance team of humanitarian aid from Indonesia carrying medicines from the government was scheduled to be received by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday. The information on this was conveyed by the head of the Crisis Control at the Health Ministry, dr Rustam S Pakaya, MPH and the director for Middle East Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, Aidil Chandra Salim, to Antara journalist Andi Jauhari after meeting with Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Palestinian Refugees Affairs Peter Ford here on Saturday morning.

RI warns of ‘new tensions’

Jakarta, NU Online Indonesia condemns the Israeli missile attacks on the Gaza Strip, accusing Israel of abusing the Annapolis agreement signed by the two disputing countries in November last year and warning that the air strikes will only trigger “new tensions” in the area. “The Indonesian government is deeply upset by the deaths of about 150 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip caused by the Israeli missile attacks, said Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah in an official statement made available to The Jakarta Post Saturday.

NU schools told to increase quality, expert says

Surabaya, NU Online Education quality of NU schools in Surabaya and surrounding areas would always be improved. At this point, there were some 50 NU schools in the capital participating in a workshop held at the Surabaya's Ma'arif office on Thursday (25/12). Each school was represented by head master, deputy head master and administration chief. The 50 schools consisted of junior high (SMP), Islamic junior high (MTs), senior high (SMA), Islamic senior high (MA) and vocational high schools (SMK) affiliated with NU and NU Teachers' Union (Pergunu) in Surabaya.

India offers scholarships to NU cadres

Jakarta, NU Online The government of India through its embassy in Jakarta would offer more scholarships to NU cadres  and Indonesian students throughout the country. The scholarships that are offered through the General Cultural Scholarship Scheme and administered by Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), New Delhi for the academic year 2009-2010 are at the Under-Graduate, Post-Graduate and Doctoral levels and cover such subjects as arts, architecture, literature, commerce, and science. Degree courses in engineering, pharmacy, and agriculture and doctoral and post-doctoral courses in various disciplines can also be pursued.

Ballot boxes scrutinized ahead of vote

Surabaya, NU Online Three days prior to an official vote recount in Pamekasan, East Java General Elections Commission (KPUD) sought to check the condition of ballot boxes, some of which were reportedly damaged or had been kept in unsecured areas. KPUD member Arif Budiman on Tuesday said his office was working with Pamekasan elections committee to make sure ballot boxes were in an acceptable condition before the scheduled recount on Sunday.

Hasyim: Safeguard against those willing to postpone

Jakarta, NU Online General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatil Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi called on Madurese people especially those from Pamekasan, Sampang and Bangkalan to safeguard against any systematically effort to postpone the scheduled third round of East Java's gubernatorial election (Pilkada) till the 2009 presidential election. According to Hasyim all parties should respect the decision made by the Constitutional Court (MK) to recount ballots of the disputed East Java gubernatorial election in Pamekasan and hold an election re-run in Sampang and Bangkalan regencies.

East Java poll body seeks wiggle room to postpone re-run

Jakarta, NU Online East Java's regional elections commission (KPUD) will consult with the Constitutional Court about postponing the gubernatorial election redo, because the legislative council has turned out its pockets. "We need to know whether the Constitutional Court's decision on the redo would allow us to postpone it until Jan. 2, after the currently irrevocable Dec. 28 deadline," KPUD chair Wahyudi Purnomo said Tuesday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Pontianak, NU Online Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Students Association (IPNU) of West Kalimantan, Paryadi was installed as deputy mayor of Pontianak for the period 2008-2013 along with mayor-elect Sutarmidji at the Pontianak Convention Center (PCC) Monday (22/12). Sutarmidji and Paryadi nominated by the Development United Party (PPP) and the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI) were installed following their win in the Regional Elections (Pilkada) on 25 October 2008. They dominated in all subdistricts, namely 34,37 percent of total votes.
