New book sparks debate on CIA role in Indonesia

Jakarta, NU Online The release of Tim Weiner's Pulitzer-winning book The Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA in Indonesia has sparked controversy over allegations former vice-president Adam Malik was involved in the U.S spy agency and the overthrow of Sukarno. Although the book was released almost a year and a half ago in the U.S., debate has erupted here after Jakarta-based Gramedia Pustaka Utama published the Indonesian version of the book, titled Membongkar Kegagalan CIA (Uncover CIA Failures) recently.

4,200 legislative candidates put on oath against corruption

Jakarta, NU Online The Ulema National Awakening Party (PKNU) swore an oath on Sunday binding all 4,200 of its legislative candidates not to commit any corrupt act, Kompas.com reported. "I swear not to commit any corrupt act nor any other disgraceful act and not to accept any gift in any form related to my duty as a representative of the people," a member of PKNU consultative board, KH Ubaidillah Faqih, led the candidates in an oath-swearing ceremony in Jakarta.

NU chairman: NU has nothing to do with the call for Gus Dur's "golput"

Semarang, NU Online As the Indonesia's largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has nothing to do with the call for golput (abstaining from voting) in the 2009 legislative and presidential elections as voiced by Indonesian former president KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) recently.   "As part of responsible citizens, NU would of course not call for the golput. Rather it call on the citizens to use their voting right as good as possible," general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said here over the weekend.

Govt urged to take firm action against blasphemous website

Jakarta, NU Online The Indonesian government was urged to take a stern measure against whoever had disseminated blasphemous pictures or cartoons of Prophet Muhammad through a website, a legislator has said. Mutammimul Ula, a member of the Justice and Prosperous Party (PKS) on behalf of the party hoped here on Thursday relating to the `website lapotuak.wordpress.com` which blasphemed Prophet Muhammad through pornographic pictures or cartoons in the website recently.

Surabaya, NU Online Soetomo well known as Bung Tomo was named as a national hero by the government recently. In this regard, the NU Branch Board of Surabaya (PCNU) has an initiative to establish what called as "Resolusi Jihad" monument. Chairman of the Surabaya's PCNU KH Saiful "Gus Saiful" Chalim said here on Wednesday (19/11) that the existence of the monument would be very important because there was a close relationship between Bung Tomo and the fatwa of "Resolusi Jihad" issued by the great chairman (rais akbar) of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Hadrotus Sheikh KH Hasyim Asy'ari on 22 October 1945.

Gus Sholah won't follow Gus Dur's call for abstaining from voting

Jakarta, NU Online The leader of Tebuireng Islamic boarding school (Pesantren), Jombang, East Java, KH Sholahuddin Wahid (Gus Sholah) would not follow KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur)'s call for abstaining from voting (Golput) in the 2009 elections. Gus Sholah who is also the younger brother of Gus Dur admitted that he had his own point of view dealing with the golput. As for him, it was not to do with the matter to vote.
