Minister sees off Indonesian would-be hajj pilgrims

Jakarta, NU Online Religious Affairs Minister Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport here on Wednesday saw off would-be Hajj pilgrims in the first flight group departing for Saudi Arabia by Garuda Indonesia airways The minister congratulated the 455 would-be pilgrims from Jakarta. They will stay in Saudi Arabia's Mecca and Madinah cities for 28 days and return home on December 14, 2008.

Prince Charles calls for inter-religious cooperation

Yogyakarta, NU Online The visiting Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, has urged for closer ties between Great Britain and Indonesia, especially Yogyakarta, and has called for inter-religious dialogues as a means to address various global issues. Surabaya, NU Online The second round of the first-ever direct East Java gubernatorial election slated for Tuesday is prone to conflicts among the candidates' supporters and to an increasing number of apathetic voters, two analysts warn. Political observer Kacung Marijan and economic analyst Indra Nurfauzi, both from Surabaya's Airlangga University, said the two pairs of governor and vice governor hopefuls had been unconsciously competing to disunite the people these past three months and had failed to offer comprehensive five-year programs needed to address the provinces's major problems, thus creating the conflicts.

Australians warned against travel to Indonesia as executions loom

Sydney, NU Online Australians were warned Sunday against travel to Indonesia as execution loomed for three Islamist militants convicted of the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreign holidaymakers. An extremist backlash against the executions is feared and Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said if Australians insisted on travelling to Indonesia they should stay clear of places that could be targeted for attack.

Jakarta, NU Online The Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama would reportedly take part in an interfaith dialogue initiated by the government of Indonesia and Lebanon in Beirut this weekend. The Indonesia's Department of Foreign Affairs announced Thursday the bilateral interfaith dialogue was under the patronage of Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, considering the the importance of dialogue as a process toward openess and sharing ideas in promoting inter-religious harmony.
