NU: Stay on guard against anti-Aswaja movements

Jakarta, NU Online The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has called on all regional and branch boards of Nahdlatul Ulama across the country to stay on guard against any movements threatening the teachings of what called as Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (Aswaja). The Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization has also reminded the NU boards of the importance of making consolidation and giving more guidance to the ummah (people).

Cairo, NU Online While many Muslim countries and communities in the West will follow astronomical calculations, others will be sighting the new moon on Saturday, August 30, to decide on the start of the holy fasting month of Ramadan. Muslims in Bosnia and Serbia will observe the first day of Ramadan on Monday, September 1, the Islamic Sheikhdom of Bosnia and Serbia said. Croatian Muslims will also follow neighboring Bosnia in observing the beginning of the holy fasting month. Islamonline.com reported.&

Pangkalpinang, NU Online Indonesia is facing a lack of experts in oil following the limited capacity of higher learning institutions in the country to produce skilled engineers employed in foreign oil mining companies. Prof Dr Sudarto Notosewiyo, Dean of the Mining and Oil Faculty of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), said here on Friday, adding that three higher learning institutions like ITB, UPN Veteran and Trisakti, produced only 280 to 300 oil engineers annually.

BIN: Pesantren vulnerable to be infiltrated by radical ideas

Brebes, NU Online Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) have remained vulnerable to be infiltrated by radical ideas being able to damage the image of Islam and even lead to radical actions like terrorism. The National Intelligence Agency chief Syamsir Siregar made the remarks after giving a speech at the ninth inauguration meeting of the Ma'had Ali (High Institute), Pesantren Al Hikmah 2, Brebes, Central Java on Friday (29/8).

Astronomers must come together, minister says

Bandung, NU Online State Minister of Research and Technology Kusmayanto Kadiman said Indonesian astronomers should work harder to resolve the differences among major Muslim organizations in determining the beginning of Ramadan and Idul Fitri given their irrefutable competence on the subject. Kusmayanto said some Muslim groups still relied heavily on the interpretation of Koranic verses in conducting astronomical observations, thus raising differences when determining the exact date for the start of Ramadan and Idul Fitri. The Nahdlatul Ulama uses verses which support rukyatul hilal (to see the moon with the naked eye) whereas the Muhammadiyah Muslim base the dates on hisab (calculations), which would agree with the astronomers.
