Boscha Observatory places experts in six locations

Bandung, NU Online The Boscha Observatory will set up six astronomical teams to be deployed in six locations to monitor and observe the crescent (hilal) in determining the beginning of Ramadhan this year. "The teams will observe the hilal on coming 30-31 August 2008 in six points. The result would be reported as data to determine the beginning of Ramadhan that will be discussed in a (itsbat) meeting," the Lembang's Boscha Observatory chief Dr Taufik Hidayat said here on Wednesday.

East Java's NU to follow PBNU on rukyatul hilal

Jakarta, NU Online Chairman of the East Java's NU Regional Board (PWNU) KH Mutawakkil Alallah said that the PWNU would follow the guidance of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) in dealing with the beginning of Ramadhan and Idul Fitri holiday. Palembang, NU Online Authorities in South Sumatra have stepped up supervision on halal products (permissible under Islamic law) ahead of the Ramadan fasting month, commencing early September. "However, the outcome was astounding, as only six out of 1,552 companies, registered as active in the food and beverage industry in 15 regencies and municipalities in the province, have obtained halal certification, as of August this year," said the head of the South Sumatra chapter of the Institute for the Study on Food, Medicine and Cosmetics of the Indonesia Ulema Council (LPPOM-MUI), Nazaruddin Ilyas, in Palembang on Thursday.

Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti to reject hisab in determining Ramadhan

Riyadh, NU Online The Council of the Senior Ulema of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia has rejected the hisab (astronomical calculations) system in determining the beginning of Ramadhan and Syawal which closely relates to the fasting and idul fitri holiday for Muslims. In its intensive meeting as reported by a daily newspaper Al Raya Qatar and newspapers in Saudi Arabia on 23 August 2008, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah representing the council said that "most ulema have agreed to reject the hisab system in determining the beginning and the end of Hijriyah (Islamic calendar) , especially Ramadhan. While the correct system is through rukyatul hilal (moonsighting)."

Malang, NU Online The local chapter of Nahdlatul Ulama's (NU) Ansor youth wing have sent out a warning urging recreational centers, massage parlors and the red-light district to close their businesses for Ramadhan.
