Lawmakers insistent on Sidoarjo replies

Jakarta, NU Online More than 200 lawmakers are preparing a motion to question the government over the handling of the Sidoarjo mudflow and they are determined to obtain from the government a solution for mudflow victims -- even if the President refuses to front up, a legislature watchdog said. To date, other motions to question the government on important issues have resulted in neither the ministers nor the House giving adequate explanations.

House members propose interpellation on Lapindo mudflow disaster

Jakarta, NU Online Some 130 members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) here on Thursday proposed to the House leadership to exercise the Parliament`s interpellation right concerning the Lapindo hot mudflow in Sidoarjo District, East Java. The proposal was handed to House Deputy Speaker Soetardjo Soerjogoeritno -- who himself was one of the initiators of the interpellation -- at the parliament building.

OAS calls for respect for media freedom

Panama, NU Online The Organization of American States issued a call to respect media freedom but ignored a U.S. request to send officials to Venezuela to investigate the leftist government’s closure of an opposition television station. A final declaration Tuesday from the two-day OAS meeting in Panama City included a resolution presented by Venezuela itself saying “member states should respect and guarantee the freedom of expression in accordance with international human rights mechanisms.”

PBNU to wait for final process of DPR interpellation on Iran nuclear

Jakarta, NU Online General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama, KH Hasyim Muzadi said here Tuesday that he couldn’t give further arguments over the absence of president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in today’s interpellation session of the House of Representatives. “This (interpellation session) has not finished yet,” Hasyim said, adding that the session was rescheduled to give Yudhoyono chance to attend the session requiring him to explain the Indonesian support to the UN resolution on nuclear issue next week.

President's representatives fail to convince parliament on Iran

Jakarta, NU Online The member of the National Awakening Faction (FKB) of the House of Representatives (DPR) Abdullah Azwar Anas asserted here on Monday that the seven ministers representing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in an interpellation session had failed to convince DPR on the government's support to UN resolution on Iranian nuclear issue. He said that president should not be absence in the session of the parliament which requires him to explain the Indonesia's support to the UN resolution.
