Five killed, 70.000 evacuated in Aceh floods

Banda Aceh, NU OnlineAt least five people were reportedly killed and 70,000 others forced to leave their homes by surging flash floods triggered by two days of incessant rain in a number of districts and municipalities in Aceh’s eastern coastal areas, local authorities said.  Aceh provincial administration spokesman Husni Bahri told  newsmen here on Saturday the worst-ever floods were affecting at least 10 sub districts in the districts of North Aceh, Bireuen, Aceh Tamiang, Gayo Lues and Bener Meriah.

Nazaruddin Umar: Drugs have infected religious family

Based on studies of many small communities, it is found that the drug abuse has also infected religious family. Govt urged to declare Sidoarjo mudflow national disaster

Jakarta, NU OnlineThe government should not hesitate to declare the outpouring mudflow in East Java district of Sidoarjo a national disaster, United Regional Party (PPD) secretary general Adhie Massardi said here on Friday. He noted that the flow of hot mud since last May should be declared a national disaster because it has submerged thousands of hectares of agricultural land, villages and industries, and forced more than 13,000 people to flee their homes.

It was deliberately formed following the meeting between President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) and Prime Minister Tony Blair in March this year. The IAG is aimed at producing and delivering  joint practical recommendation to the UK and Indonesian government on how to do best to counter religious extremist and promote better understanding between Islam and the West.

PBNU-UK to develop pesantren-based education management

Jakarta, NU Online The country’s largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and the United Kingdom (UK) would develop pesantren-based education management. At least for several years ago both sides have cooperated in giving opportunity for NU cadres to study education management at Leeds University. Due to the friendly and brotherly relationship between NU and the UK, both signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the NU office on Monday (18/12). General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi and Indonesia’s British Ambassador Charles Humfrey lauded one another dealt with the reached prospective cooperation.
