Muhaimin accused of vote-buying

Surabaya, NU Online The Elections Supervising Committee (Panwaslu) has filed a complaint with the Sidoarjo Police against the House of Representatives' Deputy Speaker Muhaimin Iskandar for his alleged involvement in vote-buying ahead of this year's legislative elections. Panwaslu Sidoarjo chairman Qomarud Zaman said Thursday his side had asked the police to quickly investigate the case to determine Muhaimin's legal standing as a legislative candidate.

Jakarta, NU Online Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) H Ahmad Bagdja expected NU-based political parties to nominate presidential and vice presidential hopefuls from NU in the 2009 election ahead. Gus Dur calls on Nahdliyin to boycott elections

Malang, NU Online Former president KH Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid has called on followers of the Indonesia's largest muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), not to vote for the National Awakening Party (PKB) and its legislative candidates under Muhaimin's camp in the incoming legislative election, due to a continued split in the party. Speaking before thousands of Nahdliyin at an informal gathering here on Sunday, Gus Dur, who is also the former chairman of the board of patrons of the PKB, said there was no political reason to support Muhaimin's camp because no legislative candidates on Gus Dur's side of the split party had been nominated to contend the legislative election.

Constitutional court annuls law on election advertising quota

Jakarta, NU Online The Constitutional Court has approved a request for a judicial review on two articles of the 2008 General Election Law that, among other things, regulate the total amount of political advertising allowed by each candidate. The chairman of the presiding judges, Mahfud M.D. said article 98 and article 99 of the law had to be annulled as they violated article 28 of the 1945 Constitution on freedom of expression.

Prabowo on Monday (23/2) laid down the first stone for the library, located at the western edge of the Training and Education Center of NU, Jl. Tampaksiring, Antirogo, Sumbersari subdistrict. The "Perpustakaan Prof Sumitro Joyohadikusumo" is at about 7,5x15 meters and has two floors. "I hope this building can officially be announced next year," Prabowo said.

Cairo, NU Online A blast rocked a tourist area of the Egyptian capital Cairo on Sunday, February 22, killing at least four people, including foreigners. Security and police sources told Reuters that a French woman and another foreigner were among those killed when an explosive device was thrown from a motorcycle outside a cafe in the famed Khan el-Khalili in medieval Cairo. Egypt opens Gaza border: Spokesman

Gaza City, NU Online Egyptian authorities started letting Gaza students, third-country residents and medical patients stranded in the territory cross the usually closed frontier into Egypt on Sunday, a spokesman for Palestinian officials at the Gaza-Egypt border crossing said. Spokesman Adel Zourab said Egypt had agreed to allow 500 students studying abroad and 500 other people with valid residency permits for Egypt or other countries to pass through the border crossing Sunday. He said 800 medical cases were scheduled to cross on Monday.
