NU chairman says ulema and clerics have big contribution to the nation

Jakarta, NU Online Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj (Kang Said) said that ulema and clerics (kiai) were the figures whose big contribution in building the  nation's character, adding that the figures had always protected the ummah and the government in the nation and state's life.   While speaking before ulema and leaders (mursyid) of sufi orders (tarekat) at the Jakarta's Hajj Dormitory on Thursday (12/2), Kang said said that the role of ulema was very important in guiding the ummah as such a reference in which they could ask anything in addition to preventing the nation from any upheaval.

Constitutional Court overturns parties' judicial review on election law

Jakarta, NU Online The Constitutional Court has turned down a request by several political parties to review a number of articles in the 2008 election law, citing lack of evidence that the articles violate the 1945 Constitution. During a hearing on Friday, Presiding Judge Madfudz MD said that the articles of the law did not violate Constitutional Law nor limit public participation during elections.

RI to raise Palestinian issue at Human Rights Council meeting

Jakarta, NU Online Indonesia will again state its position on the human rights situation in Israeli-occupied areas in Palestine at the 10th meeting of the UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva from March 2 to 27, 2009. "We have prioritized issues (that will be raised at the Human Rights Council meeting. Education ministry fails to deliver on teachers' allowance

Denpasar, NU Online The National Education Ministry has been reducing the number of private school teachers in Bali allowed to receive Rp 200,000 (US$18) per month in allowances, while the island's officials complain they are helpless to do anything about it. Since the provision of an allowance of Rp 200,000 per month for Bali's teachers in 2007, the ministry has cut back on the number of private school teachers allowed to receive the allowance, from 6,562 teachers in 2007 to 5,031 in 2008, to an expected 4,954 in 2009.
