Thailand, RI agree on Rohingya, economic ties

Jakarta, NU Online Thai and Indonesian leaders agreed Friday to tackle the Rohingya refugee issue under the Bali deal, as well as advance cooperation in several fields between the two countries. During their bilateral talks, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also discussed how the two neighbors would cope with the global economic recession and the prospects of the ASEAN Summit, which Thailand will host next week.

NU doubts MUI fatwa to help Islam-based parties

Jakarta, NU Online General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU), said it was doubtful that the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) fatwa forbidding Muslims to abstain in general elections would help Islam-based parties win more votes in upcoming polls. "I think, there is no connection between the MUI fatwa and the ability of Islam-based parties to gain more votes in the general elections," Muzadi told reporters here Thursday (19/2).

Amazed with pesantren autonomy, Taiwan's Muslims visit NU

Jakarta, NU Online The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) received a courtesy call of the Chinese Muslim Association (CMA) at the PBNU headquarters Monday (16/2). Secretary general of CMA Imam Ishaq Ma accompanied by Saiful Ahmar of the Indonesian Economic and Trade Office (KDEI) in Taiwan was warmly welcomed by some members of Syuriyah (advisory Council) and Tanfidziyah (executive council) of PBNU. As reported the PBNU visited Taiwan a couple of months ago in the frame of officially announcing an establishment of the Taiwan's Nahdlatul Ulama Special Branch Board.

US, RI pledge closer, comprehensive ties

Jakarta, NU Online The US and Indonesia have pledged to deepen cooperation, with visiting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton telling Indonesia it played a key role in US foreign policy. In a joint press conference Wednesday after a bilateral meeting with her Indonesian counterpart Hassan Wirajuda, Clinton said the US new administration recognized Indonesia’s role in handling global problems, including terrorism, protectionism, climate change and the economic crisis.

East Java election commission chief a suspect in election fraud

Surabaya, NU Online The police have named East Java election commission chief Wahyudi Purnomo a suspect for allegedly fabricating over 300,000 names on the disputed list of voters in the Bangkalan and Sampang regencies. East Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Herman Surjadi Sumawiredja said on Wednesday that the police had received a complaint from losing governor candidate Khofifah Indar Parawansa that 345,000 names on the list of voters, or 27 percent of all voters in the two regencies were fabricated.

Banda Aceh, NU Online Muhammad Zubair felt like being born again when a boat carrying him and nearly 200 fellow Rohingya Muslims finally landed on Indonesia shores after weeks of being stranded at sea. Brisbane, NU Online One-time Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid was among the 20 religious leaders, theologists, academcians, and peace initiators of the Asia and Pacific region invited to address the Inter-Faith Summit in Brisbane, from February 18 to 21, 2009. Antara reported from Brisbane on Sunday that besides the Nahdlatul Ulama leader, intimately addressed to by "Gus Dur", former rector of  Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta Prof. Azyumardi Azra, was also included in the list of speakers at the summit whose theme is "A Single Humanity, Various Beliefs".
