Jakarta, NU Online General chairwoman of Muslimat NU Hj. Khofifah Indar Parawansa said that she would like to improve health services for patients in hospitals and clinics managed by the NU's women organization. Surabaya, NU Online President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono launched two education programs and announced he would dramatically increase spending on Islamic boarding schools during a visit to an Islamic school in Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday. Jember, NU Online Tobacco farmers in Jember district, East Java, rejected an edict of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) banning Muslims from smoking. Chairman of the Tobacco Farmers Association in Jember, Abdurrahman expressed regret here on Monday the MUI edict banned children and expecting mothers from smoking, as well as people in public places.

Jakarta, NU Online The Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW) urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to adopt a firm stance in relation with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK)`s plan to summon Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni over alleged misuse of hajj funds. ICW researcher Febri Diansyah said here on Thursday that the ICW hoped the president would suspend the minister if the latter was eventually named a suspect by the KPK.
Jakarta, NU Online The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) decided Thursday (22/1) that the 32nd Congress of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization would be held in Makassar on 25-31 January next year. Formerly there were two alternative locations for the congress, namely Batam and Makassar. On account of considering plus and minus factors, Makassar is regarded as the most ideal place as such regions as Jakarta, Cipasung and Indramayu formerly offered themselves. Makassar is chosen because many big events have so far been centered in Java.
Jakarta, NU Online An Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) representative said Thursday the Indonesian Ulema Council's needed to form a united front in prohibiting cigarette smoking. "I noticed that the ulema have mixed reactions, there are some who are for and others who are against (the ban)," YLKI executive Tulus Abadi said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
