RI, Syria to urge Security Council to issue stronger resolution

Jakarta, NU Online The Indonesian and Syrian governments have agreed to urge the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to issue a "more effective and stronger" resolution to stop Israeli attacks on Palestine. "If the existing resolution is ineffective, the UN Security Council should issue a stronger and more effective one to stop the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a ceasefire," President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said at a joint press conference with visiting Syrian Prime Minister Muhammad Naji Otri at the State Palace here on Monday.

UN`s Ban disappointed Gaza truce call ignored

United Nations, NU Online U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told Israel`s prime minister on Friday he was disappointed that a Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza had so far been ignored. In a telephone call to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Ban "expressed disappointment that the violence is continuing on the ground in disregard of yesterday`s Security Council resolution," U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas said.

Khofifah questions neutrality in revote

Surabaya, NU Online Expressing doubt about the neutrality of the provincial polling body (KPUD), governor hopeful Khofifah Indar Parawansa called on the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Home Ministry to elect new KPUD members to ensure alleged bias in the previous vote does not overlap onto the upcoming revote and recount in Sampang and Bangkalan regencies. Khofifah's team of lawyers said in Surabaya on Thursday that their client was no longer confident the KPUD could stage a fair revote in Pamekasan, citing their track record in the previous two rounds, which were declared rigged by the Supreme Court.

The relationship between people and political party

Liberal democracy that brought many problems during the 1850s has now been readopted by the state as the most ideal political system. The first matter is not to do with the nature of multi-party democracy in which every person regardless of their clear aims and purposes deserves to establish a political party. Though they are in the same stand and ideology, they tend to establish their own political organization. Even from a party whose the same ideology, because they are worried about their short-term interest, they, again and again, would establish their own party. In the liberal system, people no longer think about collectiveness instead of thinking about ideology. They would do whatever they want so that they can easily establish their own party without considering the importance of its aims and objectives. At this point, political parties have been regarded work places promising enormous benefits. That is why the establishment of a party is commonly driven by such willingness rather than manifestation of the people's struggle in building a better nation/state.
