Thai government, Muslims agree to end conflict

Jakarta, NU Online Two-days of talks between the Thai government and representatives from Thailand's Muslim south hosted by Indonesia have achieved some progress in an attempt to end years of conflict that have claimed the lives of thousands of people, media reports said Monday. The talks are being mediated by Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla as the presidential palace in Bogor, about 60 kilometres south of Jakarta, the presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said.

1st of Syawal 1429 H to be determined Wednesday

Jakarta, NU Online The mechanism of determining the 1st of Syawal 1429 (Islamic calendar) by the Nahdlatul Ulama will reportedly be broadcast online through a teleconference at pbnu@yahoo.com on Wednesday from 4.00-5.30 pm at the headquarters of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama in Jakarta. Chairman of the Nahadlatul Ulama Committee of Astronomy (Lajnah Falakiyah) KH Ghazalie Masroeri will give an update to NU board members within and outside the country. Through the teleconference there will also be added time for questions and answers from the interactive teleconference especially in dealing with Islamic calendar within NU.

Indonesian military to help transport Idul Fitri travelers

Jakarta, NU online The National Defense Forces (TNI) is to make some of its aircraft and ships available for the transportation of people returning to their home-towns or villages for the Idul Fitri (Muslim post-fasting month) festivities later this month, a spokesmen said. The Air Force was preparing six Hercules C-130s, two CN-235s and one Fokker-27 to transport military personnel, their families and members of the general public to their Idul Fitri destinations, said Commodore Chaerudin Ray, chief public relations officer at the Indonesian Air Force`s Headquarters, here Saturday.

President calls on all parties to reflect on reform`s lessons

Tasikmalaya, NU Online President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on all parties here on Thursday to reflect on and learn lessons from the past 10 years of reform. Speaking before leaders of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) from across East Priangan, West Java, at a fast-breaking gathering at Cipasung boarding school in Tasikmalaya, the head of state said there were at least three lessons that could be taken from the reform movement.

East Java NU cadres will be trained on IT

Surabaya, NU Online The Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama has increasingly been concerned about the importance of information technology (IT). In this regard the organization will involve some 1500 NU cadres in East Java in a training on IT. The training program is the collaboration between East Java's NU Regional Board (PWNU) and East Java's PT Telkom Divre V and will be conducted periodically. The training will involve staff and members of institutions, committees (lajnah), autonomous bodies of NU in its all levels across the province.

Jakarta, NU Online As debate rages over a proposed bill to ban pornography in the country, House of Representatives legislators said Wednesday they were open to public opinions on the draft. A member of the House's special committee deliberating the bill, Azlaini Agus, said although the working group debating the formulation of the bill would endorse the final draft on Thursday, the schedule set for a House plenary session to pass the bill remained tentative.

MUI calls for distribution of tithes through authorized bodies

Jakarta, NU Online The Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) called on the people to channel their tithes through authorized bodies in order to prevent a recurrence of the Pasuruan tragedy in which 21 people died in a stampede to reach a tithe distribution point. "Take a lesson from this tragedy and don`t distribute tithes by inviting crowds but deliver them to those who deserve the alms," MUI Chairman for economic, tithe and alms affairs Amidhan said here on Tuesday.
