Jakarta, NU Online Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil "Kang Said" Siradj expressed his disappointment over the absence of H Mahrus Ali at an open debate facilitated by Sunan Ampel High Institute of Islamic Studies Surabaya on Wednesday (12/3). NU chairman: Islamic schools tend to improve

Jakarta, NU Online Islamic educational institutions such as pesantren (Islamic boarding school) madrassa and many other religious schools have tended to improve in the last ten years though there have been obstacles that should soon be handled. "Madrassas have now integrated with national education system. Religious leaders gather at PBNU, discuss film insulting Islam

Jakarta, NU Online Religious leaders held a meeting at the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU)'s headquarters Wednesday (12/3) to deal with the imminent broadcast of an anti-Islam film made by a far-right Dutch parliamentarian, Geert Wilders, depicting the Quran as source of violence. Present at the occasion were KH Hasyim Muzadi (General Chairman of the PBNU), Imam Daruqutni (Muhammadiyah figure), Professor Andreas Anangguru Yewangoe (Head of the Protestant Church in Indonesia), Father Antonius Benny Susetyo (Bishops' Conference of Indonesia/KWI).

Riyadh, NU Online With drawings blaspheming Prophet Mohammad and a documentary desecrating the holy Quran, alarming Islamophobia in the West will be high on the agenda of the Muslim leaders’ upcoming Summit. Corruption remains uncontrollable

Floods striking the entire country has stripped the guise of crime, namely corruption. In fact, river's dikes, roads and absorption areas are built under quality standards due to their funds have been grafted by organizing developers. Once the river water overflows the dike breaks down, absorption areas are absent so the water inundates roads. Tens of kilometers of the frail roads would get peeled off and be full of holes and even some bridges collapse. Everything is now in need of improvement in addressing  sustainability of social economic demands.  Amid the voice of people speaking more about corruption in constructing public infrastructures, it was suddenly shocked by the bribery of a grafter to a prosecutor handling specially graft cases amounted to hundreds of quintillion of the state's money from the Bank Indonesia Liquidity Assistance (BLBI). Formerly the National Banking Restructuring Agency (BPPN) set up to deal with the corruption of the state's money has also constantly been controlled by grafters. In turn, the agency has come to the end and its grafters could easily be free. Even Bank Indonesia having mandate form the state with its rocketing salary has also been controlled by those who like grafting so many cases must appear before the court.

PKB nominates Gus Dur as 2009 candidate

Jakarta, NU Online The National Awakening Party (PKB) patron and former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid was positive about his prospects in the upcoming 2009 presidential elections, after his recent nomination. "I am optimistic. We have gained support from ulemas in villages. They will encourage their masses to support me (in the election) to help build a prosperous country," Gus Dur said Sunday (9/3) in Jakarta, as quoted by detik.com news portal.

Jember, NU Online The author of the book entitled "Ex-NU Cleric Calls Shalawat and Dzikir Syirik" H  Mahrus Ali was urged to come to a much-awaited open dialogue in dealing with his work on coming 12 March. If not, it should immediately be withdrawn from public circulation. Vatican and Muslim Leaders Agreed to Establish a Permanent Dialogue

Vatican, NU Online The Vatican and Muslim leaders agreed on Wednesday to establish a permanent official dialogue to improve often difficult relations and heal wounds still open from a controversial papal speech in 2006. A joint statement said the first meeting of “The Catholic-Muslim Forum” will take place on Nov. 4-6 in Rome with 24 religious leaders and scholars from each side. Jeddah, NU Online The Islamic world’s biggest political bloc on Friday condemned the killing of eight Israeli teenagers in a Jerusalem religious school, saying it abhorred "violence and terror." In a rare reaction to an anti-Israeli attack, the 57-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference expressed "grave concern over, and condemned the recent killings of students in the west Jerusalem," a statement released here said.
