Gus Dur: PKB party upholds syariah law

Surabaya, NU Online General Chairman of the National Awakening Party’s (PKB) Advisory Board KH Abdurahman Wahid (Gus Dur) said his party wanted to uphold ’syariah’ law.   "But, the syariah law to be implemented is without naming Indonesia as the Islamic country. So far I always perform Friday prayers and fast during the fasting month of Ramadhan not because  the law," he told thousands of PKB members in Surabaya, East Java, on Sunday (24/2).

US remove diplomats from Belgrade

Washington, NU Online All but a few essential diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade are leaving Serbia as the United States piles up complaints about the Serbs’ failure to protect U.S. and other Western embassies from nationalist mobs.        The State Department ordered the diplomats’ evacuation on Friday, a day after mobs attacked the embassy to protest the Western embrace of Kosovo, a Serb province, as an independent state. Diplomats’ families also were told to leave, and the State Department warned Americans to consider strongly the risks of traveling to Serbia or remaining there.

Jakarta, NU Online Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siradj (Kang Said) told some 25 teachers of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) willing to participate in a short course in the United Kingdom to firmly be nahdliyin (NU followers) anywhere they are.   "Please maintain NU values with its tolerance, moderation, ritual and good reputation," Kang Said told the participants at the PBNU headquarters, Jakarta, Thurday (21/2).

NU to invite Kosovo's ulema in its international conference

Jakarta, NU Online The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) would reportedly invite a number of ulema at its third international conference, so-called as International of Islamic Scholars (ICIS III) in Jakarta July ahead, The invitation would soon be sent to the newly independent state from Serbia. General Chairman of the PBNU KH Hasyim Muzadi made the statement at the Jakarta's PBNU headquarters on Wednesday (20/2).

Thousands of teachers protest against educational budget cut

Karanganyar, NU Online Thousands of teachers in Karanganyar district, Central Java, staged a rally outside the local legislative body (DPRD) building Tuesday rejecting its decision to slash educational budget for 2008.     Deputy Chief of the Karanganyar chapter of the Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) Aris Munandar said the teachers wanted local legislators to pay more attention to budget allocations for the educational sector.

London, NU Online The organization of Indonesian Muslims staying in Britain (Kibar) is holding a two-day gathering to further strengthen relations among its members at North Manchester Jamia Mosque, Manchester, from February 16 to 17, 2008.     Kibar chairman Dono widiatmoko said the gathering, which was attended by about 200 Indonesian Muslims in Britain, was aimed at fostering cordial relations among Indonesian Muslims staying in various places in Great Britain.
