US credibility damaged by CIA tape affairs: lawmakers

Washington, NU Online US lawmakers on Sunday blasted the CIA for destroying interrogation tapes of terror suspects, saying it would damage America’s standing and feed suspicions about possible torture.     A day after the Justice Department said it had opened a preliminary inquiry into the affair along with the CIA’s internal watchdog, presidential hopefuls and lawmakers from both parties condemned the disposal of the videotapes.

Malaysia drops Indonesian dances from tourism campaign following protests

Kuala Lumpur, NU Online Malaysia will drop two dances that originated in Indonesia from its overseas tourism campaigns following protests from the neighboring country, officials and a report said Tuesday. Activists demonstrated outside the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta last week, slamming Kuala Lumpur for promoting Indonesia's traditional Barongan masked dance as part of Malaysian culture in its tourism campaigns, the national Bernama news agency said.

Havana, NU Online Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro on Monday hailed his ally Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for his “courage” and “dignity” in facing defeat of a referendum that would have expanded his authority. “Dear Hugo: I send you revolutionary congratulations for your speech today, which was a ’Veni, vidi, vici’ of dignity and ethics,” Castro said in a message relayed by state television, referring to the Latin phrase uttered by a victorious Julius Ceasar — “I came, I saw, I conquered.”

RI launches training programs for unemployed youths

Jakarta, NU Online Indonesia, in cooperation with the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the governments of the Netherlands and Norway, has launched a series of training programs for unemployed young people. One is a US$200,000 training program in retail business and the automotive sector, with two groups of 200 jobless youths having been recruited for a two-month program funded by the Norwegian government.

Lapindo victims to send delegation to Bali's climate change conference

Sidoarjo, NU Online Victims of the mudflow of Lapindo Brantas Inc. in Sidoarjo will send a two-member delegation to the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change UNFCCC) to be held in Nusa Dua, Bali from December 3 to 14, 2007. The two mudflow victims will convey the aspirations of their fellow victims on damage of their environment in the past 1.5 years.

Japan builds polyclinic at Tebuireng Islamic boarding school

Surabaya, NU Online The Japanese government through its consulate general in Surabaya, presented a grant of US$82,341 for the development of a polyclinic at the Tebuireng Islamic boarding school in Jombang, East Java. The cooperation agreement on the grant would be signed by Shoji Sato, the Japanese consul general in Surabaya, East Java, and Salahuddin Wahid, the Tebuireng Islamic boarding school director, Arvil Syahadat of the Japanese consulate general office said here on Tuesday.
