Gus Dur disagrees with VP`s statement on development success

Jakarta, NU Online Abdurrahman Wahid or more popularly known as Gus Dur, chairman of the Nation`s Awakening Party (PKB)`s advisory council, said he disagreed with Vice President Jusuf Kalla`s statement that the country`s development effort would be successful if there was "political tranquility." In a written statement issued here on Tuesday, Gus Dur said the vice president`s statement, made in an interview with a private television station, was against his (Gus Dur`s) thesis.

Saudi Ministers Agree to Adopt Human Trafficking Treaty

Riyadh, NU Online Saudi Arabia’s council of ministers on Monday agreed to sign up to a UN treaty against human trafficking, after the kingdom was stung by accusations it is not doing enough to combat the scourge. The ministers at their weekly meeting agreed to ratify a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000 that includes efforts to tackle trafficking in women and girls, the official SPA news agency said.

President wants immediate settlement of Lapindo victims` compensation

Jakarta, NU Online President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked for the immediate settlement of the problem of compesation payments to Lapindo Brantas mudflow victims in Sidoarjo, East Java, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said here on Monday. "The president has asked that the problem of compensation payments to the mudflow victims be solved soon," the minister said at the presidential office before attending a cabinet meeting on the revised 2007 state budget.

Pangkalpinang, NU Online Pangkalpinang city on Saturday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the establishment of a sister-school relatinship between one of its elementary schools and a similar school in Petaling in the Malaysian state of Selangor, a local official said. "A group from the neighboring country is in Pangkalpinang from Friday (June 22) to Saturday (June 23) to materialise the sister- school cooperation between the Malaysian elementary school in Petaling, Selangor state, and State Elementary School (SDN) 3 in Pangkalpinang," the city`s mayor, H Zulkarnain Karim, said here Saturday.

Jakarta, NU Online Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejadhas expressed gratitude to the Indonesian government for its latest move in preventing the UN Security Council from issuing a French-initiated press statement denouncing the Iranian leader's statement on Israel, an Indonesian official said. "President Ahmadinejad has expressed gratitude to the Indonesian government for its stand which shows a high level of independence and being the only country that opposed the French-initiated press statement so that the UN failed to issue it," the Indonesian president's special envoy for the Middle East, Alwi Shihab, said at the presidential office here Friday.
