Bush asks Congress to give money for Iraq war

Washington, NU Online US President George W. Bush urged Congress Saturday to approve a new and “responsible” funding bill for the Iraq war, warning of new violence if the money fail to materialize quickly. “I call on Congress to work with my administration and quickly craft a responsible war spending bill,” Bush said in his weekly radio address. “By working together, I believe we can pass a good bill quickly and give our troops the resources and flexibility they need.”

Palestine seeks IPU membership

Nusa Dua, NU Online The Palestinian National Council has submitted a request to the ongoing assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) to grant it full membership in the world parliamentarian body. Speaker of the Palestinian National Council, Saleem Al-Za'noon, said in a press release here Thursday that the council had applied for full IPU membership, and that this was in line with what he termed Palestinian sovereignty and international recognition.

NU expects govt to involve private in national education

Jakarta, NU Online The country's largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has expected the government to involve private educational institutions in undertaking the national education including in supporting the nine-year compulsory education program. The statement was made by the Secretary General of the nahdliyin-based organization Endang Turmudzi as attending a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing between the Department of National Education and the Nahdlatul Ulama Ma'arif Educational Institution on academics and youth program supporting a nine-year basic education compulsory program here on Thursday (3/5).

President asks KPI to admonish TV stations for showing indecent programs

Jakarta, NU Online President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) to supervise and admonish television stations which continue showing programs containing elements of sadism, gossip, mysticism, humiliating   women, and loss of national identity. Govt assures greater funds for education

Jakarta, NU Online The government has given its assurance it will increase the annual budget for education, insisting, however, that earmarking the allocation at 20 percent, as the 1945 Constitution requires, will be both gradual and indefinite. National Education Minister Bambang Soedibyo ensured Wednesday that the education sector would be allotted a greater portion of the state budget, as will other key supporting sectors such as transportation and infrastructure.
