Iranian security chief Larijani in Baghdad

Baghdad, NU Online Iran’s top national security official Ali Larijani arrived in Baghdad on Sunday on a previously unannounced three-day visit for talks with Iraqi leaders, officials said. The visit came as the two neighbours announced that Iran would send its foreign minister to a conference of world and regional powers later this week to find ways to help Iraq build peace and overcome its current security crisis.

RI wins silver in young scientist conference in Russia

Jakarta, NU Online Indonesia won the silver medal for the first time at the 14 Interternational Conference of Young Scientists (ICYS) held in St. Petersburg from April 21 to 27, 2007, spokesperson for the Indonesian Physics Olympiad Team Foundation (TOFI) said. "After two consecutive years the Indonesian team won the bronze medal in the ICYS, it now managed to secure silver in the ecology field at the ICYS competition," the foundation’s public relation official, Srisetiowati, said here Sunday.

Israel's participation in APU meeting sparks widespread protests

Jakarta, NU Online The participation of an Israeli parliamentary delegation in the 116th conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) scheduled on April 29-May 4 in the resort island of Bali had sparked mass protests in many parts of the country on Friday. In Bandung, some 1,000 people grouped in the Alliance of Anti-Israeli Mass Islamic Organizations staged a rally outside the "Gedung Sate", one of the city’s most popular icons, which houses the provincial administration.

Mudflow victims return home after 12 day-protest in Jakarta

Jakarta, NU Online Some 200 residents of Porong district, East Java would return home Thursday evening after 12-day protest in the capital to demand 100 percent payments for their assets inundated by mud flowing from PT Lapindo Brantas' gas field. MetroTV television reported that 10 negotiators of the mudflow victims would remain in Jakarta to follow up the agreement that Lapindo had to pay 20 percent of the value of their total asset and would pay another 80 percent the year after.

MUI rejects possible Israeli presence at APU meeting

Jakarta, NU Online The Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) rejects the possible presence of an Israeli delegation at an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) conference to take place in Bali late this month and asks the government not to issue any visa to the Israeli representatives, the council’s chief said. "Our rejection is based on our view that Israel is a colonial power to Palestina and South Lebanon. And we know colonialism is against the preamble of Indonesia’s 1945 Constitution," KH Cholil Ridwan, chairman of the MUI’s executive board, said here on Wednesday.

Mudflow victims to stage rally in Jakarta again

Jakarta, NU Online Hot mudflow victims are planning to stage another rally on Monday, but this time with the support of university students and members of youth organizations. They were scheduled to march from the Monument of Proclamation in Central Jakarta to the residences  of Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare Aburizal Bakrie and Vice President Jusuf Kalla. Later they would proceed to the Hotel Indonesia roundabout, and finally to the State Palace, said Sumitro, a spokesman of the hot mudflow victims, mostly residents of Tanggulangin Anggun Sejahtera housing complex, here on Monday.
