Muslims welcome British Chief Justice's comment on Shariah role

London, NU Online Leading Muslim jurists recently welcomed comments by Britain’s chief justice supporting a role for Shariah in resolving disputes. Chief Justice Lord Nicholas Phillips, who is Britain's most senior judge, has suggested that Islamic Shariah could play a role in the British legal system, echoing a similar stance by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams. "There is no reason why principles of Shariah law, or any other religious code, should not be the basis for mediation or other forms of alternative dispute resolution," Lord Nicholas Phillips said in a speech to the London Islamic Council.

Gus Dur tells story about tolerant attitude of NU founding fathers

Jombang, NU Online Ex-general chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) told story about the tolerant attitudes of NU founding fathers such as Hadratus Syeikh KH Hasyim Asy’ari, KH Wahab Chasbullah (Mbah Wahab) and KH M. Bisri Syansuri (Mbah Bisri). Gus Dur said that at a moment Mbah Wahab and Mbah Bisri had a fierce debate over a problem. The debate took place at the Ndalem Kasepuhan of Denanyar Islamic boarding school (pesantren), Jombang, East Java and was witnessed by some 40 clerics (kiai).

NU: Govt never serious to handle peasants' fate

Banyuwangi, NU Online Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Masdar Farid Ma'sudi criticized the government whose no concern for the fate of peasants. He said so far the government had never been serious in addressing their demands. As a result, he added, it had always faced problems in securing the nation's food supply. With the majority of its people living in rural areas, Indonesia as an agrarian country,  Masdar said, had in the last few years faced the lack of rice. In turn the government has to inevitably import rice from overseas for securing the nation's food supply, he said.
