No outstanding support for NU-based candidates

Semarang, NU Online There has been no outstanding support from Nahdliyin (NU followers) for NU-based candidates in the Central Java's gubernatorial election so far. At least two candidates recruited from the NU have failed to seek significant support from the much-targeted Nahdliyin. Bambang Sadono and his running mate Mohammad Adnan (non-active chairman of the Central Java's NU Regional Board) nominated by Golkar Party reached only 33.4 percent of Nahdliyin votes.

Jakarta, NU Online Three activists of the National Alliance for Freedom of Religion and Faith (AKKBB) were to be questioned by Jakarta Police on Monday (23/6) in connection with the Monas (National Monument) incident which occurred on June 1, 2008, their lawyer said. The three AKKBB activists were Anick HT (coordinator), Saidiman (action coordinator), and Ilma (action secretary), Nopemmerson Saragih, a member of the Pancasila Defenders` Team acting as the AKKBB activists` lawyer, said here on Monday.

Tehran, NU Online Iran called Israel a "dangerous regime" on Saturday after a U.S. report that the Jewish state had carried out a large military exercise, apparently a rehearsal for a potential bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities. The comments by Iran's government spokesman came a day after the U.N. nuclear watchdog chief said a military strike on Iran would turn the Middle East into a fireball and prompt Tehran to launch a crash course to build nuclear weapons.

NU chairman calls on Nahdliyin to be active in democratization process

Jakarta, NU Online General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi called on Nahdliyin (NU followers) to take part and be active in the democratization process in the country including in the 2009 elections ahead. "The PBNU has never called on (the Nahdliyin) to abstain from voting (golput)," Hasyim told reporters at the PBNU headquarters in Jakarta on Friday (20/6).
