Golkar, PDI-P learn lessons from W. Java poll

Jakarta, NU Online The country's two largest political parties, Golkar and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), said Monday they learned an important lesson from Sunday's West Java gubernatorial election. Senior officials from the two parties said they would review the vote, which appears to have been won by Ahmad Heryawan and running mate Dede Yusuf, representing the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and National Mandate Party (PAN), as they head into other regional elections and the 2009 general and presidential polls.

KPK still investigating PKS faction gratification case

Pangkalpinang, NU Online The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is currently questioning members of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction in the House of Representatives (DPR) who had admitted to receiving 33,000 dollars in gratification money, and collecting more evidence on the matter, the commission`s chief said. "The KPK is now collecting more evidence on and questioning five people in connection with the handing of 33,000 dollars in gratification money (to DPR members belonging to the PKS faction) at the Ritz Carlton Hotel some time ago," KPK Chairman Antasri Azhar said here Monday (14/4).

Lakpesdam NU committed to defend NU's 1926 Khittah

Makassar, NU Online One of the main mandates of the establishment of Nahdlatul Ulama Institute for Human Resource Study and Development (Lakpesdam NU) is to guard NU as a religious social organization. The Lakpesdam NU was established following the decision of the Indonesian biggest Muslim organization to back to the 1926 Khittah as a religious social organization and not to involve in any political parties. Hilmy Ali, who also participated in the birth of the NU's autonomous body in 1985, made the statement in an informal meeting held by Makassar's Lakpesdam NU over the weekend.

NU chairman meets with grand sheikh of Al Azhar, invites him to NU's ICIS

Cairo, NU Online General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi met Sunday (13/4) with the Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar Sayyid Tantawi and invited him to come to NU's 3rd International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS) that would reportedly be held in Jakarta in July 2008 ahead. Hasyim who is also the Secretary General of the ICIS was welcome by Sheikh Tantawi, expressing his willingness to the purposeful international event.

Ansor's Legal Aid Institute urges govt to freeze illegal workers service agencies

Yogyakarta, NU Online The Legal Aid Institute (LBH) of Yogyakarta's Ansor has urged the government to freeze and ban the existence of illegal workers service agencies following the death of a woman worker Sudaryanti from Sleman, Yogyakarta. The 28-year-old worker's death has till now remained unclear. As reported the Indonesian national having been working in Malaysia since two years ago died in Medan North Sumatra on last 17 March.

Mahathir urges prime minister to hand over power immediately

Kuala Lumpur, NU Online Malaysia's former leader Mahathir Mohamad has urged the prime minister to step down immediately instead of planning a protracted power transition, the national news agency reported. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told ruling party officials on Friday that he would eventually hand over power to his deputy, Najib Razak. However, Abdullah is only expected to determine details of the succession after the ruling United Malays National Organization holds its annual congress in December.

Bandung, NU Online Some 27 millions people came to 63,005 polling booths to cast votes in West Java`s direct gubernatorial elections on Sunday (April 13, 2008) which ran from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. local time. Three pairs of contestants who would compete in the gubernatorial election consisting of Danny Setiawan (incumbent governor) and running mate Iwan Sulanjana, Agum Gumelar and running mate Nu`man Abdul Hakim (incumbent deputy governor) and Ahmad Heryawan and running mate Dede Yusuf.

Two alumni of Maarif NU participate in international physics olimpiad

Jakarta, NU Online Two alumni of the educational institution of Maarif NU of Sepanjang Sidoarjo East Java would reportedly participate in the Young Physician Olimpiad.   The two outstanding alumni are Rakhi Habibie and Rony Firmansyah. Habibie would participate in the Asian Physics Olimpiad in Mongolia on 10-28 April ahead while Rony would participate in the International Conference for Young Physician in Rumania on coming 16-24 April.
