Protestors in Washington demand end to Iraq war

Washington, NU Online Thousands of angry protestors including the families of dead US soldiers marched in Washington Saturday demanding an end to the war in Iraq, the return of US troops, and the impeachment of President George W. Bush. A crowd of protesters some 4,000 to 6,000 strong gathered outside the White House before marching under a clear sky to the US Capitol building. Many waved placards that read "Support our troops, stop the war," and "Impeach Bush."

Jakarta, NU Online Another quake with a magnitude of 6.9 jolted Indonesia’s Sumatra on Friday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami alert for the island’s west coast, the meteorological agency said. The quake — the latest aftershock following Wednesday’s massive tremor — struck at 0601 GMT, 161 kilometres (100 miles) southwest of the city of Bengkulu at a depth of 10 kilometres, the agency said in a phone text message.

ITS: Wrong procedure causes Lapindo mudflow

Surabaya, NU Online Professor Perry Burhan of the chemical department, the Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS), blamed incorrect procedure for the mudflow in the exploration area of Lapindo Brantas Inc. Earthquakes rock East Java, damaging buildings

Jakarta, NU Online A pair of moderate earthquakes rocked an Indonesian town early Monday, damaging buildings and causing panicked residents to flee their homes, an official and witnesses said. There were some reports of injuries. The temblors with preliminary magnitudes of 4.5 and 4.9 struck Situbondo, 800 kilometers east of Jakarta, said Suhardjono, a meteorologist at the government's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency.

Awakening tradition

Human interests tend to change and make progress. Hasyim calls on residents not to be provoked

Jakarta, NU Online General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi Friday called on some 250 Balong villagers in Jepara regency coming to the headquarters of the Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) not to be provoked related to a controversial plan to construct a nuclear power plant near Jepara's Mt. Muria. Hasyim said, the government's willingness to press ahead with its plan to commence construction of the plant was yet to be finalized on many aspects.
