Govt regarded to have failed to decrease poverty rate

Jakarta, NU OnlineDuring his two-year post, President Susilo Bambang Yudoyono has failed to decrease poverty rate following a data mentioning that the poverty rate climbed from 15.75 percent in Februari 2005 to 17.95 percent in March 2006. “We need such policies to alleviate poverty through comprehensive measures. One of main problems preserving the poverty in Indonesia is that its foreign debt,” Project Officer of Millenium Development Goals & Poverty, Wahyu Susilo told reporters at a press conference at the NU office, Jalan Kramat Raya, 164 Jakarta, Tuesday (17/10).

Jakarta, NU Online In determining the beginning of the ninth month (Hijriyah) of the Islamic calendar especially about the beginning of Ramadhan, Syawal, Dzulhijjah, the country’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) has based itself on ru’yatul hilal bil fi’li, well-known as rukyat (determining date by sighting of moon especially to fix beginning and end of fasting period), as practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). while, hisab may be merely considered as a supporting system. The NU principle was called as ta’abbudi (worship or performing religious services) or taqdiimut ta’abbud ‘alat-ta’aqqul (emphasizing worship than reason) or ikmaalut-ta’abbud bit-ta’aqqul (perfecting worship with reason).

Jakarta, NU Online Secretary General of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama, Dr Endang Turmudzi expected Nahdlatul Ulama Girl Student Association (IPPNU) to enhance its cadres’ quality to be able to face challenges of the globalization era of ours. “Globalization has enabled us to achieve what ever we need, but challenges may also come from anywhere. Pekanbaru, NU OnlineEnvironment ministers of five ASEAN countries agreed to forge a joint effort to overcome the haze disaster which hit the region in the past few weeks as a result of forest and bush fires in Indonesia. The agreement was reached in a meeting here on Friday by five ASEAN environment ministers, namely Rahmat Witoelar of Indonesia, YB Dato Seri Azmi Khalid of Malaysia, Yaacob Ibrahim of Singapore, Development Minister Pehin OKH Adi Abdullah Hun of Brunei Darussalam and Api Chahai Chavaja Rempun of Thailand.

House calls for harder effort to overcome mudflow in Sidoarjo

Sidoarjo, NU OnlineHouse of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Agung Laksono expressed concern over the mudflow in Sidoarjo district, East Java, as the way to overcome the problem had yet to make a success and thus he called for harder effort to deal with it effectively. "I see there have been hard works of the national team, the government and Lapindo in dealing with the mudflow, but they have not been successful although they have used all means and alternative ways," Agung said here Friday (13/10) when visiting the location where the mud continued to flow.
