US warns North Korea directly over nuclear test

Washington, NU OnlineThe United States has warned North Korea directly of international repercussions if it proceeds with a nuclear test, the US envoy to atomic talks with the Stalinist state said on Wednesday (4/10). The North Koreans were contacted through their United Nations mission in New York, said Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill, the lead negotiator to the six party talks aimed at ending Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program.

Jakarta, NU OnlineThe Nahdlatul Ulama youth organization, Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor) has alrealy started working following the signing of a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between GP Ansor and the Ministry of Environment. The youth organization then expected to the West Java’s Ansor to undertake the casuarina planting along the Pangandaran coast. Chairman of the West Java’s Ansor, Dr Ali Anwar Yusuf said his organization would technically hand over the program of the casuarinas planting to Banser (paramilitary force of Nahdlatul Ulama). As for him, four branch boards would be involved in the purposeful program, namely Tasikmalaya town, Tasikmalaya regency, Ciamis, and Banjar’s Ansor.

PBNU team to prepare pesantren in facing disaster

Jakarta, NU OnlineEfforts taken by the country’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) to prepare Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) and social surroundings in facing disaster have been being continuously developed through its community-based disaster risk management (CBDRM NU). Following its previous meetings in Magelang and Jember, the CBDRM NU conducted Wednesday (4/10) a discussion at the Jakarta’s pesantren Assidiqiyah to monitor disaster potentials such as flood, fire and so on especially in vulnerable regions.

The flood waters have reached up to two meters high, especially in two villages in Trumon Timur regency, some 100 kilometers west of Tapaktuan, capital of Aceh Selatan regency, a local government official said.

Sidoarjo, NU OnlineManpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Suparno asked PT Lapindo Brantas on Monday (2/10) to find work for more than 3,000 people left jobless by the hot mud flooding from the company's gas drilling site in Sidoarjo, East Java. "In line with the conclusion of the limited cabinet meeting on Sept. 27, Lapindo has to be responsible for the fate of the 3,000 employees of 15 companies which have stopped their operations because of the mudflow, which has submerged not only housing areas but also many factories," he said. He cited the industrial zone of Porong as an example.
