Indonesian Muslims rally to demand ban on `deviant` sect

Jakarta, NU Online Thousands of white-clad Muslims took to the streets of the Indonesian capital Monday (9/6) to demand the government ban a minority Islamic sect branded "deviant" by top clerics. Around 5,000 protesters wearing white skullcaps and Islamic headscarves blocked the street in front of Jakarta's presidential palace to demand the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono ban the Ahmadiyah sect, AFP reported.

House pushes govt to issue Ahmadiyah decision

Jakarta, NU Online The House of Representatives is pressing the government to issue a decision on Ahmadiyah, to prevent further violence over the controversial Islamic group. Chairman of the House's Commission VIII overseeing religious affairs, Hazrul Azwar, told The Jakarta Post on Sunday (8/6), the commission had set a June 12 date for a hearing with the home minister, religious affairs minister and attorney general to demand an explanation for their failure to issue a joint decree on the Islamic sect.

NU has no right to recommend FPI disbandment

Magelang, NU Online Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Said Aqil Siroj (Kang Said) said that the PBNU had no right to recommend the disbandment of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI). Instead the government had the right to disband the Riziq Shibad-led hard line group, he said. "Whether the FPI would be disbanded or not, let the government decide. We have no such authority to recommend whatever related to that (disbandment)," Kang Said was quoted by okezone.com as saying at a religious gathering in Srumbung subdistrict, Magelang regency, Central Java province on Sunday (8/6).

As reported, NU's ulemas have considered that the Ahmadiyah was deviant in Islam. The statement was one of the excerpts of instruction issued by the PBNU in Jakarta on Friday (6/6).
