Thousands of students, activists and youth leaders rallied in Jalan Tamrin-Sudirman Central Jakarta to commemorate and call for the importance of national awakening clamorously. Various seminars were held and words were disseminated in mass media. Many political elites with their commercial advertisements took advantage from the commemoration. Any loud shouting and appeal full of hope were littered with awkwardness and even in vain. Is is possible to calling for the awakening for those having plunged the nation into destruction? Is it possible for students and young cadres to hope the awakening while at the same time they have been sterilized through schooling systems leading in turn the absence of the root of nationalism? Schools have so far yet to change their orientation to build objectivity by freeing national ideology.

RI to send full medical team and logistical aid to China

Jakarta, NU Online Head of the health ministry's crisis management center, Rustam S. Pakaya, said Monday Indonesia would send a 62-member medical and military team to help quake victims in Shincuan province, China. The team is said to consist of officials from the health ministry, the National Defense Forces (TNI) and police officers, including doctors from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Jakarta, RS Sadikin Hospital in Bandung and Dr Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya.

Indonesia to hold national interfaith meeting

Jakarta, NU Online Councils of religions in Indonesia will organize a major meeting in Jakarta, from May 20 to 22, 2008, to draft recommendations on efforts to strengthen the national unity. The meeting to be organized and financed by several national councils of religions, would be held to observe the 100th anniversary of the National Awakening Day, according to Slamet Effendi Yusuf, chairman of the organizing committee of the Major Meeting of Indonesian Religion Followers To Guard the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

NU: There have been always blind fanaticism

NU chairman comes to Vatican more often than Indonesian Catholic leader

Jakarta, NU Online He is not a Catholic priest but a cleric (kiai) or ulema. He is also the leader of Indonesia's biggest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama. He is KH Hasyim Muzadi. He said that he had come to Vatican more often than Indonesian Catholic leader Cardinal Julius Darmaatmadja.   Hasyim who is also the president of World Conference of Religions for Peace said that he had so far met with two supreme leaders of world's Catholic members, namely Pope Johannes Paulus II and Pope Benedict XVI.

NU: Inter-religious dialogue to create togetherness

Jakarta, NU Online General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi said that inter-religious dialogue was very important to create both togetherness and brotherhood. The dialogue, he added, was aimed at avoiding any suspicions among religious adherents. According to Hasyim, there had lately been many religious-nuanced conflicts. Whereas the conflicts were nothing to do with certain religion.
